Yes Hugo, some Savonius rotors have TSR's as high as 1.5, based of course on as you pointed out no load conditions which is useless, pinwheeling like a lawn ornament. TSR's are always measured at rated power for a given rotor. Drag based devices have no place in electrical power generation. Fun garage projects (I built one for fun) but that's about it.
A Darius VAWT is a lift based, not drag based like this one, and can have impressive TSR's but they have self start issues and need to be motored up to speed to work effectively.
Unfortunately this will go nowhere. Physics has seen to that.

This is in fact a modified 3 - blade Savonius Rotor. See Wikipedia. Those are known to spin faster (at the outside of the blades) than wind velocity, as long as there is no load.

Your response doesn't add up at all, respectfully, but sorry. You say it has an efficiency of 65%. That's greater than the Betz limit which can't be achieved, especially with a drag based VAWT. You would be the first in the world to claim an efficiency of greater than 20% for this type of rotor. You not only crushed that but pushed past the maximum energy recoverable in the wind. I don't think so. With a drag based machine too? TSR of less than 1.

The video shows it putting out 120 watts at 13 mph and 2000 watts at just 2 mph greater as stated above? It is impossible for a turbine of that swept area to put out 2 kW. Ludicrously impossible.

Nothing is adding up here and your statements sound a little like wild unsubstantiated claims.

Mr. Lobania,

Would you consider this product available for roof top mounting on a residence?

Well done, Imran.

Thanks for the clarification which appeared to be a direct response to my questioning of specific mechanical and electrical aspects.

Now, I see what was unclear in the video or description as an excellent idea of yours to pack the bearings and the Gen INSIDE the rose. Thus, directing the cantilever effects on the fixed shaft which one wont be worried about against a lateral static force, and not the bearings.

Regarding the buzzling text in the video about the battery, your explanation is satisfactory, and should reflect with its clarity on that vague text.

I assume that you were not offended by my critique. After all, I'm also a consulting and inspecting engineer, an old colleague who's spent the last thirty four years analyzing and solving mechanical as well as electrical problems everywhere in Europe, in a wide variety of products ranging from small machines to giant overhead cranes.

I hope my comments were useful and wish you a continuous success.

Hello all I am the inventor.

I have been getting email's recently and was wondering where they were coming from. Seems like this website and article has caught a lot of peoples attention.

Despite the comments above its is fact that this product works. There are many wrong assumptions made above which I hope to make clear.

The wind capturing device is such to work on ground level in turbulent conditions. It is the most efficient VAWT as in testing it proved 65% efficient as the current highest efficiency available is 45% and less.

The bearings are all held in the "bud" of the rose. The whole unit as can be seen does not move. The bearings used are closed and fully integrated into the permanent magnet alternator.

We all know that at ground level in urban conditions wind fluctuates in strength. The unit is actually harder to stop and can carry on two minutes between gusts of winds before it come to a complete standstill. As the fluctuation of electricity is not wanted when using electricity a battery acts as a buffer to give constant electricity to the user. The battery also acts as storage at quiet points and at full usage the battery will take 8hrs before it dies out.

The battery in the base gives the product some stability and the ratchet and hook implementation to anything stable such as trees, ground conreated hooks etc allow it to gain stability form its surroundings and the position of the tension allows strength to be given in a 360 direction to oppose any cantilever effects at the weakest point of the design.

I have tested the unit outdoor with good success. I have ironed out some flaws in collecting water if the unit is used in the rain.

As explained to a kind person who emailed me I am in full time employment as a consultant with a growing interest from hospitals towards green technologies. I will keep people posted on any developments as I have had many offers to buy my product. But at 22 years old i am gaining all the experience i need to develop the product into big time production.

Hope this is of help

If you are interested in getting an idea of exactly how big traditional turbines actually are compared to these, here is a great article with a few videos of the installation and insides of 1.5MW turbines. I can only imagine what 7-10MW turbines look like.

this is the reply I got from the inventor (Imran Lobania)

-----------------------------------------------------
I'm working at a consultancy firm and have the intention in a 20 year period to produce the product commercially.

But at the moment it is not available for sale.

If you have any questions about the product I am available to answer via e-mail.

It produces 2KW of of electricity constantly for use under 15mph wind. It is unique as the blades design i have created cuts the wind and pushes the permanent magnet alternator faster than any VAWT available.

The video shows it working under 13mph winds producing 10 amps going directly to a 12v battery inside the unit which an inverter changes to a UK three pin.

I wish to add a mechanical point of view to my response above:

1. Wind Force: No revolving mechanism would welcome a lateral force. The first components to complain will be the two end bearings of the would-be Gen.
With the bearings being too close to each other (as seen in the photo), and the thrust of wind far away from both, we'll have a complex case of Cantilever effect (lateral force plus lateral torque) with the bearing closer to the turbine is most affected, making the claimed low-noise divide screaming in a couple of weeks operation.

2. To make things worse on pt. 1, the turbine diameter is too small in proportion to its length, making the center of wind drag even further from the bearings.
This feature has another disadvantage: the smaller the diam. of a revolving body is possibly the higher speed of rotation but with exponentially lower torque. Then we wont be able to ask the turbine to deliver any reasonable energy.

The moment we switch on any load on the Gen., the turbine would tend to stop due to the reverse torque of the back EMF.

In fact I see this device as a Tulip, not a rose!
A rose would mechanically perform better.

It very nice for improving wind turbine in different direction for the improvement of its efficiency but what if our direction changes side by side in consideration of the atmosphere above the surface of the earth is just like that of water above the ocean surface using different method we can get electrical energy specifically from the wave of water which is both transversal and longitudinal wave so likewise why we try on the surface of the earth by not to use hard material

Some comments:

1. As far as I know, wind turbines operating at ground level should have a wind collector. in such a case, the rose together with a wind collector will not be too portable.
This is clear in the video, as the inventor used what looks like a wind tunnel/ nozzle to get it turning.
I'm curious to know results of a complete test in an open place and the generator under load.

2. In the test, the inventor measured the wind speed, but, what about the equally important electric measurements? There's no cables attached to the base which supposedly contains a small gen.

3. I'm also buzzled by a written comment in the video, saying: "the turbine has a battery which allows the turbine to be used if there's no wind!" The question is: to be used in what? Is the goal to see it turning regardless of wind or to get some energy our of it?
