In reality they need a lot more than 100 sq meters per site for safety reasons. When things go wrong with winding gear or cables and they crash to the ground, anything or body in the way of the those or the kite itself is at risk of injury or damage. This would restrict the flying of Kitegen to areas away from, say, highways, centers of population, etc.

How will lightning affect them?

Alvin, a Watt is necessarily per second. The more familiar units are joules/second, which is energy per time. Thus a value like 5TWH (5 tetra-watt hours) is a measure of energy consumed, usually in a year. But if you want to find that energy, you have to screw with the dimensions a bit. No doubt you’ve looked at wikipedia in the meantime for this answer…and no doubt gone nuclear with your views!

Generating electricity from kites; sounds like Benjamin Franklin may have had the “key” to the whole thing many years ago.

I like the idea a lot but I do have some questions.

1: As someone else wrote: is this not something that will require labor?

2: I understand that you can find more powerful winds at higher altitude but how does that generate more power? Isn’t the power coming from the movement of the base platform? If yes then the higher the kite is the smaller movement you will get from your base?

3: Where do you plan on constructing these? I’m having trouble seeing countries wanting these intruding in their airspace.

The size of kite and distance/length of kite to power station to increase power output. How many kites to get 500W?

Good question Alvin…I know that each GW = 1 billion watts…A 100 MW(1 MW = 1 million watts) power plant can produce approx. 500 GWh yearly. Hope this helps!

I just thought that Kites by their dependence on wind & uplift require constant monitoring and adjustments making them labor intensive?
