Energy X-Prize The X-Prize Foundation, most commonly known for it’s space exploration challenges, has launched a new generation of contests that they hope will have a global impact aned encourage a positive influence on global warming and progress toward clean, green, renewable energy. $100 million will be awarded to prize concepts that promote a world where energy is no longer a source of conflict and pollution, such that energy will someday be affordable and abundant, clean and renewable, and used efficiently and equitably. The project will start with a nine-month process to select the best prize targets.

The first two prizes have been determined: The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, which seeks to inspire ultra-efficient passenger vehicles; and The Biofuels X PRIZE, which seeks to engender next-generation, decentralized, sustainable liquid transportation fuels. Additional prize targets will be chosen as part of the Energy X PRIZE Suite from areas such as carbon capture, solar, water, sustainable housing and other categories of interest.

Do you think contests like this will accelerate our use of green technologies?

Yes! With out money, its hard to get people motivated to start dedicating time to something. This will not only encourage people to work hard and faster to find alternatives for the things that are hurting our environment, but it will also help to spread awareness all over the world. With out programs like these and people who are willing to stand up and fight for what they believe, global warming and the many other environmental problems would have gone unnoticed and not talked about for even longer then they did.
