Any green initiative in the cell phone industry is a welcome idea. GREAT to see big companies getting on board too. Check out AT&T's Green Charger...

NagarajaM
"The way in which we are advancing, pace at which gadgets are produced for human needs puts energy needs in future to the situation ‘cart before the horse’
one thing we need to revert back to simple living depending mostly on nature bounty of renewable sources of energy."

I can see the case for desiring a simpler life. However, the likelihood that western civilization will opt for such a change in lifestyle is about the same as the Beatles getting back together. As long as a societal love affair exists between the consumer and techno-gadgetry, demand for power will increase.

Breakthroughs in power efficiency of these devices, along with a distributed network of renewable energy, may meet future demands... so long as the cost-per-watt provides economic incentive to do so. However, consumerism is never satiated as the distinction between needs and wants becomes blurred.

Radio Shack has no UPC code for ethics and you can't buy a soul at Walmart. Contentment is not an off-the-shelf commodity. One either gets it from a family unit or one doesn't get it at all.

I really would like to see this solar energy cell phone take off and be dropped soon. Also laptops should also follow. As the older I get I realize the need to conserve our environment in a positive way. The biggest we can do is try to eliminate batteries because batteries are not healthy and posed great risks to our environment as a whole. We can do this now since we know the effects batteries have. The best time to that is now.

Infinite Power Solutions produces thin-film batteries. They claim that their product can be recharged with ambient RF energy (radio waves) or kinetic energy (walking, handling, etc.). Further, the thin film batteries are so small that they can be embedded into the motherboard of most devices.

At least that's what the company is claiming at their web site: http://www.infinitepowersolutions.com/.

I'll be looking for more battery solutions in the near future. When I find something new, I'll be posting it at my spot, http://tccalternativenergy.blogspot.com.

Miscanthus is a genus of perennial grasses, historically researched in the EU and US to identify the ideal energy crop for combustion to generate heat and electricity. Miscanthus satisfies these criteria, and the result is a crop that is both economically profitable and environmentally friendly.

I think this is a great idea, well past its time. Cell phones are currently considered a necessity. It seems they are replaced every 2 or so years. Considering the quantity of cell phones globally, and frequency of replacement, sheer economies of scale would indicate an affordable and truly "green" charger would be a reality - as long as the sustainable technology is there to build upon - in the very near future.

"Using airbed foot pumps to drive an embedded turbine to generate energy and convert it to electric power is now being tried."
Maybe in Europe, but that idea will go down like a lead balloon in America. You want we should "pump" our phones up?

Good to "curtail eco-pollution that emanates from the huge number of still-in-use and out-of-use cell phones". However, the said eco-pollution is not limited to the mentioned toxic elements which are all battery manufacturing material. The most eco-polluting in using the cellphones are the cellphones themselves with their health threatening emanated short wave radiation, proved to be harmful to the human brain especially for children.

While modern advancements in battery technology, (always sought by so many scientific researchers)are needed for ever growing applications and not only for cellphones) it's really disappointing that giant cellphone maker, with great resources announce heir intention of making green batteries and chargers without a single word about their main device, which will continue to be HELL RED, regardless of the beautiful green battery buried inside.
